Long ago, grass was cut in many places out in the fields and on steep hillsides like these. There were far fewer trees here than today, leaving open grassy areas. This grass became important winter food for the farm animals. The farmers cut it with a scythe, dried it where it grew, and stored it in small hay barns. Later, they carried it home – sometimes all the way by hand.
